Security Guard vs Security Officer: What’s the Difference?

While the terms ‘security guard’ and ‘security officer’ are often used interchangeably, the meanings of the two are often very different. A security guard’s duties will typically be more limited. They won’t have the same kind of authority to act on matters as a security officer would. Someone who is regarded as a security officer is more than likely professionally trained and takes on a broader range of responsibilities. The term officer could also be used to reference a supervisor in charge of a team of guards that stays on standby to promptly respond to incidents of any kind. In simple terms, a security guard patrols their own station and acts on commands from an authority figure. A security officer is someone who makes the decisions, delivers orders and manages a team of guards.
